The cache is located near a concrete structure about a mile south of Richvale. The structure caught my eye when I noticed the date "1936" etched into it.
In 1936 the US was in the middle of the great depression. 38% of American families earned less than $1,000 per year. FDR was returned to office upon receiving 61% of the vote. Boulder Dam (later re-named Hoover Dam) was completed, as was the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge. The DC-3 was introduced, and the helicopter was invented. "Life" magazine debuted, as did color film, polaroid sunglasses, and zippers in men's trousers. The VW was first marketed, and eventually racked up more sales than Ford's Model-T.
In sports, a 22 year old athlete from Alabama, Jesse Owens, won four gold medals at the Olympics in Berlin. Bob Feller, at the age of 17, signed with the Cleveland Indians, and soon tied the one-game strikeout record (17). John Madden was born, as were Don Drysdale and Wilt Chamberlain.
Other notable people born in 1936 were John McCain, Robert Redford, Alan Alda, Burt Reynolds, Bobby Darin, Glen Campbell, and Roger Miller. The Pulitzer Prize went to Margaret Mitchell for her novel "Gone with the Wind." To paraphrase Rhett, "if you don't like my cache, frankly I don't give a darn..." (just kidding)
