Geocache Description:

Micro Cache placed at a vacant R. Vickery elementary School.

This Cache was placed to honor past school teachers R. Vickery is listed in the Fort Worth City Directory, 1896-97 as Glenwood Public School located on the south side of Vickery Boulevard at the corner of Holt. At that time is was not a part of the Fort Worth School District. The community of Glenwood was incorporated as a municipality in the 1890’s, in part to avoid annexation by the City of Fort Worth. Following assurances by the Fort Worth Board of Education that a new elementary school would be built in the area, Glenwood property owners voted for annexation in June, 1909. Construction of the promised school began in September and was completed one year later. The land for the campus was purchased from J.A. Lewis and his wife for $800 on July 8, 1909. The new school opened in September, 1910. The building of 12 rooms and 4 half-basement rooms cost the school district about $46,000. The campus was further enlarged in 1922 and again in 1933 with the construction of 2 rooms, a cafeteria, and an auditorium. The school was named for Mr. Richard Vickery, an early real estate developer in the community. Mr. Vickery was born and reared in Devonshire, England, and came to America in 1870, first living in Michigan and Wisconsin before moving to Texas. He moved to Fort Worth in 1901. He died on January 14, 1914. One of his eight children, Charles Richard Vickery, was also prominent in real estate development in Fort Worth. R. Vickery closed as a white school in May, 1962. It reopened as a black school in September of 1963. It closed its doors as a school in 1983. Lenna Hughes FWISD Archives dept.
