Geocache Description:

Vanastra was a major training centre for radar operators during WWII. When the base was closed, Vanastra nearly became a ghost town. As you look around the town, you can see many buildings left from that era.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT park on Highway 4 to look for this cache. It is not safe to do so. Instead, go into town and then park at the western end of 5th Avenue.

As you drive along 3rd Street toward the cache, you will likely see two items of interest. The first is a huge pile of salt, almost a city-block square and perhaps 20m high, covered with black polyethelene (see photo in the gallery). The salt mine in Goderich stores salt in Vanastra for use during peak demand periods in the winter. If you visit the cache at certain times in the winter, though, the pile might be very small or gone, depending on the seasonal demand for road salt.

The other thing you'll see are some intriguing tall, painted carvings made on some tall tree stumps.

The cache itself is a camouflage-taped lock-lock container hidden in an ideal typical location, across the street from a Hydro-One base. Our GPSr wouldn't settle down to better than 20' accuracy, even with 400 counts in the averaging process, but if you get that close, you should be able to find the cache with little difficulty.
