Geocache Description:

Don't be a victim to Cholera

Take a look at the nearby Cholera cemetery. Cefn Golau Cholera Cemetery is the last remaining cholera cemetery in Wales and as such is recognised by Cadw as being of national importance. The people buried here perished in three cholera outbreaks, the first and largest in 1832-3, the next in 1849 and the final one in 1866. There are 235 graves in the cemetery, some containing entire families. Although there is no record of how many people are buried there, it is estimated that one twentieth of the population (then approximately 7000) of Tredegar, were lost to cholera. The churches and chapels were ordered to be closed from those who died of the disease that came to be called the King of Terrors and so this desolate location was selected as the last resting place of its victims.
You are on the Homfray Trail, one in a series of trails called in the footsteps of the Ironmakers. Copies can be downloaded from www.blaenau-gwent.gov.uk or pick up a copy from Parc Bryn Bach.
