Geocache Description:

Rudamina Mound is one of the most famous monuments of Jotvingians. The mound had been constructed near the former lake on the top of a separate, high and massive hill. The area of this hill is 2 ha, height - even 195 metres above sea-level. The mound is constructed in a safe place, secured by nature rubs. When the section of the mound had been made, archaeologists marked 4 stages of it. There were stones, balks and clay used for this mound. Archaeologists found, that the mound existed from the beginning of the I millennium. At the end of the I - at the beginning of the II millenniums it was reconstructed - the field was expanded, slopes were paved with stones, mound was heightened and, supposedly, defensive wall was built. The mount became a powerful fortress, which defended from Teutonic Order. Founded heads of the arrows shows their attacks. The castle of this mound had been burned several times. The last time this mound was settled by Jotvingians in the X - XIII centuries There are two more Mounds - Elveriške and Maišymu - only some kilometres way from Rudamina Mound. Supposedly, all those Mounds used to form solid line of defence. Because of the project "Adaptation of cultural heritage for tourism development in Lazdijai and Punsk municipalities" new stairs to the Mound had been built, other work had been done to make this place fit to tourism.
