Geocache Description:

Located at Castlehill Park, Dungannon

This cache has been placed beside the archaeoligical ruins of Dungannon Castle, although outside of the area so free access can be made to the cache at any time. If you visit the cache during opening hours though it is well worth taking the time to explore the ruins.

Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council was awarded a grant of £2.2million in 2007 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to develop and interpret Castle Hill as a historic park, repair and preserve the famous twin towers on the site and convert Ranfurly House into a new cultural and exhibition centre which will tell Castle Hill's rich and turbulent history.

Castle Hill, in the centre of Dungannon, occupies a special place in the history of Ireland as it was the major stronghold of the Gaelic 'Kings of Ulster', between the 14th and 17th century.

O'Neill won victory against the English army in the battle of the Yellow Ford 1598, After the battle of Kinsale 1601 he was forced to surrender to the English. He set sail from Rathmullen, Co-Donegal. Whilst en route to Spain his ship was blown off course. He lived the rest of his life in Rome and never saw Dungannon again.

Following the flight of the earls and the demise of the O'Neill stronghold in Ireland, Castle Hill became site of the grand 18th-century townhouse of George Knox, a Scot who was gifted the town and lands of Dungannon following the Plantation of Ulster in the early 17th century.

THE CACHE is a magnetic film canister holding log and pencil. It is within sight of houses opposite so please use stealth retrieving and replacing the cache. There is an interesting mural depicting the flight of the earls and the cache is hidden at the back of this mural, so not a difficult find.
