The Fourth Cache in the “Famous Dogs” series celebrates the amazing work of Guide Dogs.

There is evidence that people with vision loss have been working with canine companions for centuries. In the Roman city of Herculaneum, ruins from AD 79 contain a mural showing a blind figure being unmistakably guided by a dog. Similarly, a wooden plaque from the Middle Ages depicts a blind man being guided by a dog on a leash. The modern Guide Dog movement began after World War I, and the first official Guide Dog “Buddy”, was placed with his partner in 1929.

Today, Guide Dogs are more prevalent than ever, with over 10,000 dog/handler teams working in North America. Everyday we learn how these amazing animals bring not only companionship, but freedom and independence to their partner.

Two famous Guide Dogs brought their handlers to safety during the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre on September 11th. “Dorado” and “Roselle” both guided their handlers down over 70 stories of stairs, before tower one collapsed. Despite being unharnessed and released of their responsibilities, both dogs continued to guide their owners to safety.
