Geocache Description:

Whashton Smelt Mill is a roadside cache that also reveals a little history of our industrial past.

The parking waypoint co-ordinates is a very short walk from the cache.

The smelt mill was located in the wooded valley upstream of this cache. The stone bridge over Smelt Mill Beck is called Copper Mill Bridge. Smelt Mill Beck also passes Gilling Lead Smelt Mill.

Whashton Smelt Mill, sometimes called Feldom Smelt Mill operated from 1671 to 1725 although other references below indicate that it may have operated after 1725.

It smelted the ores of both lead (60%) and copper (40%). The copper being mined locally at Feldom and other mines to the north and west of Richmond.
