Geocache Description:

Located about halfway up the Savannah River, Augusta, Georgia is located on the Georgia-South Carolina border. It also marks the end of the navigable waterway up the Savannah River from the Atlantic Ocean. The end of navigation is caused by a fall line, on which Augusta sits.

A fall line marks the area where an upland region and a coastal plain meet, creating an unconformity. Fall lines are typically prominent when crossed by a river in the form of rapids or waterfalls. Because of these features river boats typically cannot travel any farther inland without portaging unless locks are built. On the other hand, the rapid change in elevation of the water, and the resulting energy release, makes the fall line a good location for a water mill. Because of the need for a port and a ready supply of water power, settlements often develop where rivers cross a fall line. This is evident in the creation of the Augusta Canal.

What few may realize is that as a result of how fall lines work, Augusta lies on the southern most end of a well known mountain range. Granted, Augusta will not be mistaken for a mountain town, however the historical geography is there.

The purpose of this earthcache is to highlight Augusta’s place along the fall line and its little known mountain topography and geography. In order to receive credit for this cache, you must post a picture of yourself with your GPS in hand. Also, at the posted coordinates sits an educational marker. You must use the marker to answer these two questions:

1. On the educational marker is a historical photo showing what the river used to look like, what year was the photo of the Savannah River taken?
2. Augusta lies on the southern most end of which mountain range?

The final question that needs to be answered can be view directly in front of you when standing at the posted coordinates.

3. Looking at the Savannah River, and knowing what you have just learned on this page, which you are standing on, the upland region or the coastal plain of the fall line?

Once you have the answers, email them to me for credit. Any posted logs which do not have accompanying answers in a reasonable amount of time will be deleted without notification.

Other cities in Georgia which sit on the fall line include:

Milledgeville, Georgia on the Oconee River
Macon, Georgia on the Ocmulgee River
Columbus, Georgia on the Chattahoochee River
