Emigrants traveling to Oregon and California were often distracted by a strong chemical smell that many think of as 'Rotten Eggs". Stories of medicinal waters, steam vents, and hissing gases told by mountain men and fur trappers kept travellers attention for miles as they plodded up this valley.
