580 kHz Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

EromneK 70: I am archiving this cache. It appears to be gone. It had a good run (almost 12 years). It's time to open up the location to someone else. Thanks to all who came and searched and I hope everyone got enjoyment out of it.

Geocache Description:

This is my first hide. Should be an easy cache and dash for most. No need to leave the roadway to search for the cache. There is room to pull off the road.

Searching for this cache will take you within view of the WHP-AM radio antenna farm on Tower Road near Enola. WHP-AM is the oldest radio station in continuous operation in the Harrisburg area. It signed on in 1925 as WHBG on 833 kiloHertz (kHz). The call letters were changed to WHP in 1929 when it was on 1430 kHz. WHP later moved to 1460 kHz and finally to 580 kHz, the name of this cache, on May 21, 1951. It's six towers are actually simultaneously used only at night, when the station is directional towards the southeast. Only one tower is used during the day. WHP-AM was the home of the legendary Ron Drake (and his famous squeaking rubber duckie).

For the uninitiated, kHz stands for kiloHertz, which is a measure of a radio station's frequency.

In the evening and after dark, WHP-AM's towers are quite an impressive sight, with their red beacons winking in and out above the landscape.

PLEASE NOTE: THERE IS NO NEED TO ENTER THE WHP PROPERTY TO LOOK FOR THIS CACHE. IT IS UP THE STREET FROM THE TOWERS.

Enjoy your search!
