Northeast Michigan Waterways #2
DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS CACHE IN WINTER. DO NOT TRY TO GET TO THIS CACHE LOCATION ANY WAY OTHER THAN BY BOAT. The river is moving all year long and though it may look frozen over, it is not safe to hold a person's weight.
Grab a kayak or canoe and head out to explore a fabulous area rich in islands and wildlife. There are boat launches in Sytek Park and at the Fairgrounds.
Where the cows used to roam.
The Oxbow Farm, flooded over by the dams, used to have cows living here. Now you'll see well established deer trails all over this island.
Park your boat at a nice little tree-made harbor at N 45 04.440 W 83 27.637. Then you'll have a short light treck through the trees to the cache.
Reminders: KNOW THE WEATHER. Plan on a few hours if you are doing all three nearby caches in the Waterways series.
Take: water, snacks, lifejackets, deet, sunscreen, etc.
Stay to the open water even if a shortcut looks promising. The slough, areas full of reeds and lilly pads and seaweed etc, is very difficult to push through.
