For many years, this site in the city of Harper Woods was home
to the East Side Drive-In, the first drive-in theater in Metro
Detroit and one of the very first in the Midwest. The East Side
opened May 26, 1938 with The Big Broadcast of 1938, starring W. C.
Fields and Dorothy Lamour. Automobile capacity in later years was
listed at 970 vehicles. The East Side closed in 1977 and was
demolished a year later.

This photo was taken by Paul from the top of the drive-in in
1975 (I think). Pretty cool!
I'm not originally from this area, but I know some other cachers
are. If you remember the drive-in, tell us a story in the log about
how you sneaked someone into the movies by hiding them in the
trunk.
Today, this park is a popular place for picnics and gatherings
because of the shelters and community building. Stealth may be
required.
This cache is a small, so there is room for small trade items,
travel bugs and such.
This cache was placed with the permission & encouragement
from the Harper Woods Parks & Recreation Department. Johnston
Park is one of three parks in Harper Woods. Please obey all posted
signs about park hours, no dogs, no golfing, etc.
Parking for this cache is conveniently available in the parking
lot.
