Historical Piper Street
Historical buildings
abound both in and around Kyneton. The town experienced days of
tremendous growth during the goldrush era and many of the fine
buildings from the 1850's survive today.
The majority of the
buildings from that period were constructed from the locally mined
bluestone and the majority of the churches, hotels and the railway
station were all constructed from that durable material.
Piper Street has
undergone a number of booms from its early prominence in the
goldrush era, and a revival during the 1970's when a number of
artists and antique dealers took up residence. The street is again
booming and a walk along today will take you past craft shops and a
number of classy eating establishments which may tempt you to
linger.
This cache will take you
on a short walk along historic Piper Street, showcasing just 4 of
the buildings from the 1850's and 1860's. The walk is designed to
be done on foot and should take no longer than half an
hour.
