Geocache Description:

The expression, attributed to Jonathan Swift, is practically a catchphrase in our culture, “You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.” Essentially, according to bartleby.com, this means it is not possible to create something good when you start with poor materials (visit link) However, sometimes it takes a bit of discernment to see that there is potential in the materials.

When we first moved to Knoxville in 1984, Fruit of the Vine Produce operated on this corner, using a recycled, converted service station to house its operations. They were a really good place to get excellent, low cost produce. Alas, over the years the business deteriorated, changed hands and then ceased operations.

The building sat, unused, for several years. Then one day, in late 2007 or early 2008, workers showed up. They stripped off the old awning, tore down the greenhouse that had sat derelict for more than ten years, tore down an ugly chain link fence on the corner, and began removing materials from inside. We figured that someone had bought the property and was tearing the building down. Good riddance to an eyesore, we thought.

We were wrong. Soon, much to our surprise, new paint went on the building, new doors went up, and the workers began renovating the inside. This formerly derelict building (sow’s ear) was transformed over a period of months into a very attractive one (silk purse). This cache is placed to honor the vision and hard work of the business owners. If anyone in Knoxville deserves one of the orchid awards of the Keep Knoxville Beautiful organization (visit link) these folks do!

The name of the cache has a double meaning; see if you can figure it out! Cache is a small lock and lock, dressed in camo duct tape, with room for small trade items and a pen.
