“Michigan Spirit Quest”
The Michigan Spirit Quest series of
geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries
built by MICHIGAN Pioneers. This series is inspired by and is a
continuation of the Indiana Spirit Quest caches created by
SixDogTeam. In just over four years, the SPIRIT QUEST has grown to
over seven hundred caches and the hiders have grown to fifty cacher
teams in 5 states and one province, most of which are comprised of
Dogs and their Humans. Over 1,000
cachers have logged over 20,000 finds. One cache machine found 102
ISQ caches in a single day (daylight hours
only).

#36 - "South Of Allen"
WELCOME TO SOUTH ALLEN
CEMETERY
This is one of three cemeteries in Allen
Township.
From a local history book (150 Years in the Hills and Dales, Vol
II):
Daniel P and Polly Brockway sold for thirty dollars to the Township
Board one-half acre which was deeded December 11, 1854 and recorded
January 22, 1855. The two witnesses were I. W. Sheriff and
Charlotte Brockway.
A small burial ground which had been set aside a little more than
one-half mile north on M49 from Arkansaw Corner on the east side of
the road. This was done because coffins varying in price from $1.25
to $10.00 each were being made in a small building near the bridge.
After the South Allen Cemetery was opened, the graves from Arkansaw
were transferred to South Allen.
The Board of Health of Allen Township paid seventy-five dollars for
another one-half acre to Benjamin Brockway and his wife Lillian on
December 7, 1872. This plot was adjacent to the southern boundary
of the first land.
Then, on October 6, 1919, the Township paid an additional
seventy-five dollars for another one-half acre at the north side of
the original cemetery. This was purchased from Edgar Frarey and his
wife Rose. The deed, witnessed by A. L. Norton and T. W. Brockway,
was recorded October 30, 1919.

Samuel Dewey (cir 1762 - Feb 2, 1854) is the only person to be
buried in Allen Twp who served in the Revolutionary War. He is also
the earliest born of anyone in this cemetery. This memorial was
marker by the S.A.R.:Ann Gridley Chapter, Hillsdale in 1929. This
grave is located in the center section, row 6, near the south
drive. He was a drummer boy in the Revolutionary War.
"This veteran Soldier resting here Lived during Washington's
career And served his country well."
***
Ellen Thomas (Jul 4, 1837 - Oct 10, 1841) is the earliest grave by
calendar date in this cemetery. This grave is also located in the
center section, row 4, halfway between the two drives. This is
Ellen Thomas' family head stone, which has more detail. Her stone
is directly to the north (very short stone) abbreviated E.T.
