Undalya Basket Traditional Cache

This is one of Mr matmob’s secret and favourite fishing spots, although it’s not going to be secret now! Now and again he would give a fish he caught to the old gentlemen who lives nearby, and the old man would always insist on returning the favour in the form of a bucket of honey or a bunch of grapes, or something similar. Nothing better than a bit of local produce bartering!
The bridge at this location has always been known as the ‘basket bridge’, and you will see why. However, it is technically called a bowstring truss bridge.
Five metal bow string trusses were built in South Australia between 1879 and 1880. The one you will see here was completed in 1879 and has the largest span of the five (38.1m). Because of this large span, the detailing of the Undalya Bridge is different from the others.
Adjacent to the bridge is a small reserve, which according to the plaque on the gate, was presented to the residents of Undalya by LJ Carman Esq as a Centenary Gift on 1936.
