“Michigan Spirit Quest”
Welcone to SQ - Forest Lawn Cemetery - Michigan Spirit Quest #56 This cache is hidden on the grounds of the Forest Lawn Cemetery, in Dexter, MI. The land was part of a parcel owner by Samuel Dexter, who came to Michigan in 1824 from New York. He purchased 926 acres of land that was incorporated as the village of Dexter. For years, Dexter offered cemetery plots free to anyone. To this day, the cemetery includes a potter's field. In 1826, when Washtenaw County was organized apart from Wayne County, Dexter was appointed as judge. He and his second wife Millicent are buried here, as is Civil War hero Colonel Harrison Jeffords who was killed on July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg. Also buried here is Calvin Fillmore, brother of U.S. President Millard Fillmore. Located in the back of the cemetery is marsh area which feeds into the Huron River system. You will see many types of animal and waterfowl on, in, and above this area. The Michigan Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries built by MICHIGAN Pioneers. This series is inspired by and is a continuation of the Indiana SpiritQuest caches created by SixDogTeam. FIND LOGS ON THIS CACHE THAT INDICATE NIGHT CACHING WILL BE DELETED WITHOUT NOTICE! The cache is not located near a grave... If you find a fallen US flag, please stick it back in the ground or replace it. As always, please be respectful, and cache in, trash out.
