After Arkansas became a State in 1836, an election was held to
select commissioners whose duty it was to decide upon the location
of the county seat. The three men were: Abraham Laster, Elijah
Alston, and Lorenza Clark. The meeting to determine the location
was held at Mr. Alston's store at Spadra. The Honerable James
Craven, whose farm was 4 miles up Spadra creek, was willing to deed
a plot some 1/4 miles square to the new town in order to locate it
on his property. Abraham Laster, rkl's great great grandfather, was
the only one in favor of this proposition. Mr. Alston believed that
Spadra, the territorial county seat and the largest town in the
county, was the only place to consider. Mr. Clark would only vote
for his own town of Morrison's Bluff. Mr. Laster saw the solution
by proposing to Mr. Clark that he would vote to name the town
Clarksville if Mr. Clark would vote for the Craven's location. And,
thus, it was settled. The City of Clarksville was incorporated
later in 1848.
