The Church With No Name Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

spindlewood: We have been out today to check on this one and found that the Gamekeeper has placed several feeders in the area which will make it awkward for cachers, so to this end we are closing the cache down. Thanks to all who have visited.

Geocache Description:

We have passed this church on numerous occasions, and have always referred to it as ‘The Church with No Name’, because of the absence of a name board. We have recently found out that it is, in fact, called ‘All Saint’s Shouldham’.

We only managed to find out its name by asking the people who live in the adjacent house. Subsequently we tried to find the history of this church but there seems to be very little written about it. The church was built of stone c.1335 and then had the chancel totally rebuilt in the Victorian period. The west door is beautifully carved with flowers and foliage designs; can you see the two keys? In the field that slopes up from the village hall is the site of a medieval settlement, which includes earthworks and buried remains. To the north there are ‘Priory Earthworks’, it is highly likely that the ground upon which ‘All Saints’ stands was once owned by the original Priory. There are six bells in the tower; the oldest of which was cast by an itinerant bell founder, Austin Bracker, during the reign of Mary Tudor (1553 – 1558).

In order to find this cache you need to answer the following questions and carry out some easy maths to determine the co-ords. All the answers will be found within the churchyard itself. The public footpath enters the churchyard by means of a small gate in the wall, from there it is a short walk along the public footpath to the cache.

1. How many of the following names can you find on the WW1 War Memorial?
Plaice A
Porter B
Muffett C

2. ‘Laid by Lady Hare’ in DE68

3. How many letters are engraved on the curved seat? FG

4. The number of stone carved heads on the church? H

5. How many Merlons are on the top of the tower? JK

The cache co-ords are:

N52 39.(G-A)(F/B)(H*J-B-C) E000 29.(F*J/H)(K*B/J)(E+E+K/A)
