The geocache hidden at the posted coordinates is a regular
geocache, however, it is also part of the Allegheny GeoTrail (AGT),
a publicly funded project designed to promote a pleasant and
positive experience and image of the Allegheny National Forest
region and its gateway communities. The AGT utilizes the growing
interest in geocaching to assist both residents and visitors to the
area in learning more about the unique attractions in the ten
participating counties. This cache contains a unique self inking
rubber stamp which you should use to stamp your Allegheny GeoTrail
Passport to verify that you found it. When you have found a minimum
of six AGT caches, you will be eligible to have your AGT passport
validated and receive a commemorative AGT trackable geocoin at
participating locations. You must have your official AGT passport
with you when you find this cache in order to stamp it. Click on
the Allegheny GeoTrail Logo below to visit the AGT website at
www.alleghenygeotrail.com for complete details and a listing of
participating locations where you may pick up and validate AGT
passports to receive your souvenir geocoin, trackable at
www.geocaching.com .
This cache is placed on the Summit Loop Trail in the
Tionesta Lake Recreation Area. This trail forms a loop that begins
and ends near the Control Tower parking lot. The trail has a hill
to climb as you might guess from the name of it, but it is a nice
easy walk up if you follow the trail which utilizes a few
switchbacks to ease the grade. Although the climb is uphill, the
hike is well worth it as you will pass by three nice overlooks of
the Tionesta Lake. The trail winds past many large trees such as
shagbark hickory, red oak and white pine. The walk completely
around the loop will take about forty-five minutes, so it is only a
few minutes longer to complete the entire loop than to grab the
cache and dash back down the trail the way you came up without
checking out the overlooks. Chipmunks, squirrels, and deer are
frequently observed along this trail. After completing the cache
you will enjoy the drive out the one way loop past the boat launch
and drive right out through the large emergency spillway. Enjoy
your tour of the Tionesta Lake facilities and come back to hike the
other four trails when you want to enjoy a nice
hike.
Tionesta Lake is one of 16 flood control projects in the
Pittsburgh District of the U.S. Army Corps. of Engineers. Tionesta
Dam is a key link in a system of flood control for the Allegheny
& Upper Ohio Rivers. The projects flood control capabilities
have prevented over $536 million dollars in flood damage since its
completion in 1940.
