Geocache Description:

You'll need your mountain bike to get to this one. The geocache is located at the base of "Bigfoot the Tree", a massive red cedar located close to Seymour Falls Dam in North Vancouver.

Most people who visit the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve (LSCR) will park their cars at the end of Lillooet Road in North Vancouver and then walk, roller blade, or cycle to the end of the Seymour Valley Trailway on the west side of Seymour River. It looks like the trailway dead-ends at the river, forcing you to return home the same way you came. But few know that you can actually ride a 24 km LOOP in this wilderness, taking you on a wonderful and diverse adventure. And while you are at it, you can visit Bigfoot the Tree.

(IMPORTANT UPDATE JULY, 2012... There is now a pedestrian/cyclist BRIDGE crossing the Seymour River right below Seymour Falls Dam. So access to Bigfoot the Tree is easier than ever! You can find the entrance to the new bridge just past the Seymour River Fish Hatchery.)

Be warned that this loop is only possible during the summer and early fall months, as you will have to forge the river. Fortunately, the river level is typically very low in summer, allowing you to easily and safely get across to the other side. My young children have made the crossing.

Here are the instructions for cycling the loop:

1. Have a look at the map of the LSCR provided here : (visit link)
2. Ride to the end of the Seymour Valley Trailway. This trail will take you to a large sandbar on the river.
3. Cross to the east side of the Seymour River here: N49 25.406 W122 58.309 (See picture)
4. To connect to the Spur 4 road, follow the short trail that starts here: N49 25.333 W122 58.280 (See picture)
5. Go visit Bigfoot the Tree here: N49 25.496 W122 58.156 (See picture)
6. Follow Spur 4 south to Spur 4 bridge and cross it to the west side of the river.
7. Ride Fisherman's Trail, then Homestead Trail, back to your car.

For added adventure, visit the Seymour Fish Hatchery with its surrounding old growth and also Lost Lake (aka Rolf Lake) along the way. You might see me up there, as I've ridden these trails hundreds of times.

Bigfoot the Tree is a sight to behold and is located right next to the Spur 4 gravel roadway. The entire side of the mountain, right up to the top of Mount Bishop, has some of the grandest monster trees I've ever seen. I wonder how many centuries old they are? And can you imagine that all of Greater Vancouver was once carpeted with such trees?
