This cache is located in Marham Fen, just off the side of a public footpath, the fen itself is open to the public so do not worry about leaving the footpath. Absolute stealth is necessary if this cache is not to be compromised.
Smugglers used to bring contraband from ships anchored off King’s Lynn, into Marham Fen using small boats, by way of the river Nar. This was safer for them than using the lanes, which were frequently patrolled by armed Excise men. The boats were pulled silently up the Nar only on the blackest of nights and the contraband was carried into the fen where it was hidden in specially constructed underground chambers made of wood and waterproofed with canvass and tar. One night the smugglers were ‘muggled’ by local gamekeepers who followed them around the fen trying to see where they would cache their contraband. Unable to go to their usual cache, they had to hide the contraband at a temporary location, leaving micros around the fen so that their smuggler friends could find the temporary cache, should they be caught and locked up. If you have found all the micros, ‘Marham Fen 1 to 7’ and ‘Marham Fen Spur’, use the letters and numbers to complete the following formula:
N52 (A-F) (H-E).NNM E000 MN.(F+H) (A-S+H) (M-E)
You will then be able to find the cache, use sharp eyes and a strong arm, but watch out for muggles, particularly Excise men and gamekeepers!!
