chameleon68: With great sadness, this one needs to be archived.. the beautiful old tree gave up on Saturday and collapsed.. it was perfect weather, it was just too old and rotten inside to stand any longer... luckily no one was hurt, but it crushed a truck - missed the lucky owner by just a few seconds. At least a lot of geocachers got to admire it while it was still standing.... R.I.P. !

Geocache Description:


According to the state's Big Tree Champion site... "In Elkton, Maryland in Cecil County is the Holly Hall Oak. It is a White Oak, which is believed to be over 437 years old. The tree grew along Route 40 and came to prominence in the late seventies when a developer purchased the land to build a shopping Mall. The developers announced that they would deed the tree to the town for preservation, but that was never done. The tree is still alive but according to Maryland DNR Forest Service Cecil County Forester, it “is in poor condition, many limbs have been removed and there is dieback in the crown and severe decay. Its circumference is 21’ 1”, height is 72’ its branches spread 92'."

The container is a small camo'd bison tube hidden on the tree. You do NOT have to go anywhere near the poison ivy or crawl around on the ground or be extremely tall to reach it. You don't need to dig around or climb on it or in any way do any damage to the tree. Please do not hurt it in any way, we just wanted people to have a reason to come visit this beautiful tree and admire its impressive size and history (mid 1500's!) while it's still here. Please replace the cache as you found it.
