'The Ash Banks'
Formerly the site of the old Beech Tree Colliery off Foxcote Lane, Colley Gate. The shafts were first sunk in 1873 but mining only began in about 1922, and was closed in August 1958, the last coal mine in the district.
The first part of this multi cache will take you past the old pit head baths. The building is still standing and is now currently used as the local Scouts meeting centre.
Part one is hidden in Caslon Wood, a small woodland area that is now part of the Black Country Urban Forest. It is a camouflaged micro cache in a small pill bottle. There is no log book or trinkets inside, the only contents are the usual Geocaching information & a laminated card containing the co-ords for part 2 of the trail. Beware, this area can get muddy after rainfall.
Part two is hidden on the other side of Foxcote Lane in some more woodland area, again part of the Black Country Urban Forest. It is another micro cache hidden in a 35mm film container. This area is where the cache gets its name from. There is no log book or trinkets inside, the only contents are the usual Geocaching information & a laminated card containing the co-ords for the third & final part of the trail. Again, this area can get quite muddy after rainfall.
The final cache in this series is a short walk over the other side of Oldnall Road into a larger area of ash banks and wooded area of the Black Country Urban Forest. If you head for waypoint co-ords N52°27.119 W002°06.014 it will lead you in the direction of a concealed footpath. If you have small children in your party please be careful when approaching the road. The final cach contains the usual Geocaching info along with a log book and some little treasures to trade. Please make sure that the cache is well hidden when you leave as this site can be popular with dog walkers. Again, this area can get quite muddy after rainfall!
Keep to the paths and don't always follow the most direct route that the GPSr takes you in!
After a good hunt (and hopefully a succesful one) you may like to round it off with a well deserved pint in the Whynot Inn, located at the junction of Oldnall road and Whynot Street which is not too far away from the final cache site.
Parking can be found along Foxcote Lane, just off Oldnall Road or a little further up the Lane at the following co-ords. N52°27.197 W002°05.506
