Geocache Description:

A traditional cache hidden in the heart of a picturesque Surrey village, easily accessible but stealth required!

When the troops and I were preparing for a day's caching around Lingfield we were shocked to find not a single cache in the village - an oversight we will now rectify.

Lingfield village lay within the Anglo-Saxon administrative division of Tandridge hundred. Lingfield was not listed in Domesday Book of 1086, but is shown on the map as Leangafeld, its spelling in 871AD.

The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul was rebuilt in 1431, although the original 14th century tower remains. Its collection of brasses and monuments are amongst the finest in England. There had been a church on the site for some centuries before the 14th century building. The library is housed in the Old Guest House of the College for Secular Chaplains built in 1431. This hall-house is all that remains of the original College.

The area around the church has been designated a conservation area and includes many well-preserved buildings from the 16th to 18th centuries. In the main street, there is a cross and village cage. The cage, last used in 1882 to hold a poacher, was built in 1773. The cache is close by the cage, with its duckpond (known as Gun Pond Plaistow for some reason). Next to the cage is an old oak tree, still living despite being completely hollowed out by lightening - an ideal caching tree for a microcache, perhaps! The nearby pub also takes its name from the cage, should you be in need of refreshment after finding this cache.

The cache is a 400ml plastic tube with a white cap. The areas is busy with muggles both day and night so stealth - or plenty of chutzpah - is required. You should however be able to retrieve the cache easily, although a newspaper may help your cover. The cache, when hidden, includes a Zambian 10,000 kwacha note (don't get too excited - only worth a quid or two) as a reward for First To Find.

Please rehide carefully as the location is busy.
