Part of a short circular walk around Hartcliffe suitable for all ages.
This is part of the Hart Bypass circular walk series of caches to be done in conjunction with Hart Bypass - Ecklands View to find the main cache.
Suggested parking for 1-2 cars can be found by the bench at N53 30.660 W001 40.027.
The route is not taxing & if you include the "View from the Hart" would make an short walk of approx 2km to keep younger cachers interested with 4 caches on varied ground in approx 1 hour or less.
There are no severe climbs involved but the path can be very muddy in places so please wear appropriate footwear.
All caches can be accessed via established pathways (except for the last few yards) but would not be ideal with buggies or pushchairs.
The Hartcliffe Tower was built in 1856 by a linen merchant called Henry Richardson. At this time the Linen works were Barnsley’s largest industry. Richardson also built Hartcliffe Lodge before becoming the first Mayor of the borough of Barnsley. The tower looks as though it’s a Folly but it has stairs running through the middle of it and some believe that it was used as a viewing platform for game shooting. Other ideas are that it was used as a look out for Mr. Richardson returning from Manchester on business.
The Tower was in disrepair but was restored in 1999/2000 by Mr. Jeff Pears on whose land it is sited on. He re-built it with his own money as a gift to the community of Penistone. It has since occasionally been open to the public e.g. on Penistone's ‘Yorkshire Day’ celebrations.
The cache is a small 5" Square tub with log book , sharpener & pencil etc. Suitable for coins / smaller TB's only.
