Geocache Description:

A pleasant walk in Hurst Wood which used to be part of the much
larger Forest of Bere. The trail is partly tarmac, partly hard
packed gravel and partly earth, which can be slippery after
rain.

Before 1815 the Forest of Bere stretched from Winchester to the borders of Sussex, and Waterlooville did not exist. This fragment of ancient woodland is now called Hurst Wood and is a haven for wildlife in spite of it's proximity to housing and major roads.

The given co-ordinates are for the free off-street parking which is the start point for this cache hunt. After you have parked up head for the underpass and go through to N50 52.861 W1 00.873

How many rows of words are there on the sign here? This is A

Now head for N50 52.674 W1 00.841 At this point there is a notice board. What year were the footbridge and connecting paths opened? This is XDHE

The upper part of the figure of eight is a 1.B kilometer circuit.

Now cross the bridge and follow the path to N50 52.719 W1 01.192 On the way to the next waypoint you will pass through the meadow (Look out for the Purple Spotted Orchids in Spring) and then be walking along the line of the old Hulbert Road. Look out for the Hermitage Stream on your right.

At the waypoint you need to work out the following

Birds – Butterflies = C
Mammals + Snakes – Holly Berries = G
Hazel Catkins = J
Holly Leaves = I

And to complete all the numbers you need F = H – D

The cache is at N50 AB.CDE W001 FG.HIJ

You probably will have noticed that this is a popular spot for dog walkers so please be careful of muggles at the cache site. When you have found the cache carry on walking along the path and you will complete the circular part of the walk.
