Geocache Description:

A little history lesson.

Sterling was granted by the General Assembly of the Republic of Vermont on February 25th, 1782, to Samuel Safford of Bennington, and 62 others. A majority of these early proprietors, like Safford, were soldiers of the revolution and recieved thier grants for payment of duty.

When originaly granted, Sterling contained 23,040 acres. It was bordered to the north by Johnson, The south by Mansfield, the east by Morristown, and the west by Cambridge. In 1840, Mansfield went defunct, and it's land was set to Stowe, thus giving Sterling a new southern neighbor.

In February 1856, the town of Sterling was dissolved as it was to hard to make a go of it on the terrain, The land was divided between Morristown, Johnson, Stowe.

If you walk through the woods up in that area you can still find cellar holes and foundations.
