Ice Age Erratica Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Geowoolly: Maintenance of this Geocache is not easy. There are very few Geocachers that have attempted to find it. So for lack of Geocacher interest, I have decided to archive it.

Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the Harrison Hills area of Lincoln Co. along the Ice Age Trail. A moderate walk along the trail is neccessary to find the cache sites. Trailhead parking is located off of County Highway "B"at: N 45 24.619 W 089 27.742.

The listed coordinates will take you to a micro-sized capsule located near a glacial erratic. The coordinates found there will lead you to the final larger cache which is a camoed peanut butter jar . The final stage is located a short distance from the trail. Both stages should be easy to find. The Ice Age Trail is marked by yellow painted blazes. To follow the trail - follow the yellow blazes. On this section you should always be in sight of a yellow blaze. This trailhead shares access to an ATV trail. It will not be neccessary to follow or walk on the ATV Trail.

The Ice Age Trail's coarse closely follows the leading edge of the last continental glacier in this area. As the ice sheet advanced southward it pushed and carried with it silt, sand, stones, rocks and boulders. When conditions warmed approx. 10,000 to 18,000 years ago, the glacier retreated to the north leaving behind a new and different landscape by depositing its debris in unique ways.

Erratics are large stone, rocks and boulder left behind by the glacier. The erratic featured by this cache is the largest example found on the surface along this part of the trail. Many, if not all, of the erratics have been moved hundreds of miles from their places of origin before they were deposited by the retreating glacier.

Try to imagine, if you can, the power and the forces neccessary to reshape the entire landscape on a continental scale. I hope you enjoy your time spent on this section of the Ice Age Trail. More information about the Trail can be found at iceagetrail.org. Remember, mark a waypoint for your vehicle and follow the yellow blazes.
