The cache is located atop Italy Hill, with parking and the trail starting on Italy Valley Road. N 42° 37.436', W 077° 16.884'. You can reach Italy Valley Rd. from RT 53 in Naples, or off 364 just east of Potter.
The cache is a retired 50 cal. Ammo box, painted Red, with CACHE in black letters on top. It is hidden at the base of a fallen tree, covered with bark and branches. The cache is full of the usual gadgets.
For those of you with a taste for adventure, there is an overnight shelter, named by hikers and hunters, The OutBack Inn. The OutBack is located at N 42° 38.493', W 077° 15.541', complete with outhouse. Inside the OutBack there are more logs to read and write about your adventure. If you have the guts, stay for the night. This time of year the foliage in the area is great. The drive down Italy Valley Road is worth it all by itself.
Words of WARNING!
- There have been reports of both Black Bears and Mountain Lions being seen in the area. Be careful.
- There are a number of washouts and gullies that cross the trail. Use care during the Spring thaw, or after a heavy rain. Although I placed the cache after a weeks worth of rain, I had no problems, but you never know!
