The cache you are looking for is a small peanut butter type jar, painted camo, which can be found along the knoo portage put-in around the Wausau dam, mile marker 160, behind the Wausau Paper Company’s administration building. These are all located on Clarke Island, where the original settlement of Big Bull Falls, later changed to Wausau, began in 1839. This area is also near Wausau’s popular whitewater kayak and canoe course, another project done in cooperation with WVIC.
This cache begins the series that is a part of the Wisconsin River Centennial Trail (WRCT). 2007 marked the 100th anniversary of the Wisconsin Valley Improvement Company, the organization that controls the flow of the Wisconsin River, providing power to 25 hydroelectric power plants, numerous businesses along the river, and helping to provide countless recreational activities to millions of people who enjoy the river and its 21 reservoirs from its source in Lac Vieux Desert on the Wisconsin/Michigan border to its meeting with the Mississippi River 430 miles later at Prairie du Chien. As part of its anniversary, WVIC has published a series of maps, 23 in all, that give detailed information about each stretch of the river, including portages with satellite photographs around rapids and dams, campgrounds along the way, boat landings, and other amenities. These maps and information can be downloaded and printed off the Internet free of charge. Traveling the Wisconsin River, our first highway in the state, one can find countless information on the histories of its communities, the unique geology of the area, plus all the fun recreational things to do along the way, including geocaching. In looking at the geocaching maps, I would venture to guess there are a couple of hundred caches not far from the banks of the WI River. All you have to do is coordinate the WRCT maps with the geocaching.com maps and you’ve got something to do for the next couple of years.
