Gold Creek Dam was first built in the 1880's, only to be damaged
during floods in early 1890. This resulted in the world's first
non-reinforced concrete stepped spillway being built, which is
still in use today. You can learn more about the Gold Creek Dam at
this interesting website: www.uq.edu.au/~e2hchans/gold_crk.html
To get to the cache, park at the end of Gold Creek Rd, climb
though the fence and follow the gravel road up to the top of the
dam wall. As you look across the spillway from here, there’s
a small track leading to the cache that follows the hill up next to
the dam. To get to the track walk along the top of the spillway and
you’ll need to climb a small section of rock. NO NEED TO
CLIMB UP THE CLIFF! Kids will need careful supervision around the
dam and at ground zero (the cache is hidden not far from the edge
of a cliff).
Cache is a 3L Sistema container with lots of swaps, and there is
a clearly marked zip lock bag for any TB's that would like to
travel to France - other TB's wanting to stay in Australia can be
placed in the cache, just don't put them in the bag! I can't
promise that there will be regular TB trips to France but there
will be a number of pickups over the next few years.
