Geocache Description:

The final cache location and final waypoint are both in a car park and cachers have been asked by security what they are doing. The security guy was very pleasant and said it wouldn't be a problem so long as you let them know what you are up to. To avoid arousing suspicion therefore it may be prudent to let the people in the booth know why you are there. If it becomes a problem let me know and I'll move the cache.

This is a multi-cache based upon locations in Ardrossan which have something in common with other locations somewhere in the world.

Start at the memorial to HMS Dasher at N 55° 38.400 W 004° 48.567. HMS Dasher was an aircraft carrier which blew up between Ardrossan and the Isle of Arran on 27th March 1943. The disaster was covered up by the government of the time fearful that morale would be adversely affected. There has also been some speculation that the bodies of one of the sailors lost was used as a decoy to persuade the Germans that the D-day invasion would not take place in Normandy and was immortalised in the film ‘The Man That Never Was’.

The HMS Dasher memorial will be used to find locations of the waypoints and their counter parts. On the memorial are five crests, four of which have numbers on them. Let the following letters represent the following numbers:

A = first digit of top left hand crest
B = Second digit of top left hand crest
C = Third digit of top left hand crest
D = Second digit of top right hand crest
E = Third digit of top right hand crest
F = Last digit of bottom left hand crest
G = Second digit of bottom right hand crest
H = Last digit of bottom right hand crest I = 1st digit of date on the main inscription
J = Number of park benches around the memorial - 1

Now find the locations and their counterparts. Note that all distances are in miles and all bearings are in °T (true bearings, not magnetic).

Go to the first waypoint at N 55° 3A.CBF W 004° 4A.JBA which has a counterpart at N JE° GB.EFB W BBB° BH.JFA. Enter the coordinates of the counterpoint in your GPS and note the distance between this location and its counterpart and the bearing in °T. Let Z = the first digit of the distance.

The second waypoint is outside a large building at N 55° 3A.CEA W 004° 4A.JAH with a counterpart at n CE° JC.EGE e BEI° IH.FCJ (note that is east of the Greenwich Meridian). Let U = the sum of the first three digits in the distance.
Now take a walk to N 55° 3A.CHA W 004° 4A.HIB (the direct route may not be the best, much better to walk to N 55° 3A.GDG W 004° 4A.AGC and take it from there). This location’s counterpart is at n GA° JG.GFD w BHH° BI.EEJ. Let T = the first digit of the distance and X = the second digit of the distance.

To find the fourth waypoint go to N 55° 3A.CDD W 004° 4D.ICI and take the distance and bearing to the counterpart at N GA° CE.CDG W BBD° EI.DJA. Let S = the second last digit of the distance and W = the middle digit of the bearing in °T.

The final waypoint can be found at N 55° 3A.CFA W 004° 4D.JAI which has a counterpart at N JB° GD.HCE W BBE° GJ.CAE. Let V = the first digit of the distance to the counterpart and Y = the sum of the first two digits of the bearing to the counterpart.

The cache can be found at N 55° 3s.tuv W 004° 4w.xyz.

If you would like more information about the locations and their counterparts please get in touch once you have found the cache.
