Geocache Description:

A raised pebble beach above the present high tide line, formed when sea levels were higher

Over the millions of years of earth's history sea levels have risen and fallen many times due to major climatic changes.
About 8000 years ago this area was about 5 miles inland but a sea level rise due melting ice caps, after the end of the last ice age, has now put it on the coast. The raised pebble beach at Porlock Weir was formed some 6000 years ago. The raised beach, over one kilometre long was formed when the sea level was several metres higher than it is now, so that even at high tide this strip of pebbles remains dry.
At low tide the preserved stumps of trees from the forest that grew here thousands of years ago, before the sea took over, can sometimes be seen.

In order to claim this earthcache we need the following...

A photo of you and/or your GPS device, on the beach attached to the log if you wish to. You must answer the questions detailed below and email them to us seperately. You don't need to wait for a reply and may not even get one if we are too busy but we will contact visitors without answers and the logs will be deleted if they are not complied with.

An answer to the following questions which should be emailed to us but not shown in the log......

1 - How wide is the flat raised portion of the beach at the following co-ordinates? - N51 13.268 W003 37.719 ..... There's an obvious feature here that will help. The easiest way to do this is to use your GPS device to log the distance.

2 - How much did the sea level rise in this area due to the melting ice caps? You'll need to go onto the web to find this. A visit to a nearby cache could also help!

There's a Pay & Display Car Park in the village near the beach at N51 13.129 W 003 37.629
