This cache is dedicated to the reminiscence and admiration of Roseville’s early dwellers. It is part of a series of caches called: CACHE OUT IN ROSEVILLE
Auburn-Folsom Road started life in 1850 as a trail called Auburn-Sacramento Road. It allowed miners to travel back and forth with supplies in their ox cars between Whiskey Bar, Horseshoe Bar, and Rattlesnake Bar – all mining claims along the American River. It also proved to be a temptation to unscrupulous types, enriching the pockets of bandits lying in wait to relieve travelers of their belongings. The most brazen and famous robber along the stretch was known as Rattlesnake Dick. He had once been an honest, though unsuccessful, gold miner at Rattlesnake Bar. He turned to rustling horses until he was imprisoned for 2 years. When he got out, Rattlesnake Dick, his brother, and some friends formed a gang, waiting around corners for their next ox cart or stagecoach hit. This cache, HIGHWAY ROBBERY pays tribute to this interesting history about this road.
