This geocache requires a long hike in through a beautiful mountain setting.
Two geocache access locations are from Minnewaska State Park entrances along Rt. 44/55 and the Sam’s Point Preserve. Geocache access via the Lower Awosting Carriageway from the Lake Awosting parking area (N41°44.082’ W074°14.656’; UTM: 18T E562848 N4620596) provides a wonderful combination of carriageways and trails some 4.36 miles distant. The 2008 NY-NJ Trail Conference Map 104 (Shawangunk Trails - South) illustrates access routes well. This cache location is 1.32 miles east of The Ledge Catch (GCZ6QH) and 1.73 miles west of The Mouse Hole (GCGDRD). The cache is located within a sheltered bedrock ledge near the trail on the northeastern end of the lake. The cache location was selected for its nearby view of Haseco Lake - one the Shawangunks five ridge top sky lakes.
Current Cache Contents Include: log book, pencil, two airplanes, sea lion, dolphin, wind-up bug toy, small tape measure, and a bead kit. In addition, the Idaho Bug Coin TB (TBJ9FH) was placed here for the first cacher to move along its way. This is one of the most outstanding TBs you will likely encounter.
The Haseco Lake geocache location was selected as one of a series of Peter’s Kill watershed caches designed to highlight the geology and hydrology of the basin. Haseco Lake is also known as Mud Pond and is situated near the western headwaters of the Peter’s Kill watershed. Fly Brook drains from Haseco Lake, flowing generally eastward, until is joins the Peter’s Kill.
This geocache was approved and permitted by Minnewaska State Park Manager Alex Collins on 8-15-08, Permit No. MSPP-08-05.
