Fortifying Bermuda against enemies was a deliberate British policy from the earliest days and the construction of forts in Bermuda were the first substantial buildings erected. The most feared enemies were first Spain, then France, America and Germany.
Bermuda forts were built of stone whereas British North America, Spanish territories and French possessions forts were made of wood. Only in Britian were forts built of stone.
Originally there were approximately 90 forts in Bermuda. Today only 24 are left where good examples of the rifle muzzle loaded guns still in their original carriages and platforms can be seen. All are Historic Sites.
Recently a King George III half penny dated 1775 was found at the Castle Island Fort, as well as 15 pieces of rare Bermuda Hogge Money dating back to 1615.
Fort Scaur is in Sandy's Parish and encompasses 22 acres with magnificient views, park land, picnic areas and walking trails. It was built in the 1860's when the United Kingdom believed that hawkish elements in the United States were conspiring to siege the Royal Naval Dockyard in retaliation for the role the British ships played in helping the Confederate forces and using Bermuda as one of their ports. The Fort protects the front of the Dockyard from enemy attacks from the South Shore beaches. They had built an enormous dry moat that was cut right across Somerset Island. Invading troops from the mainland would have to cross under fire from the Forts cannons and rifles. There were 64 pound guns on disappearing carriages.
The Atlantic Ocean can be viewed from one side of the Fort and the Great Sound on the other. It is a great place for picture taking.
The cache has several souvenir items as well as Padawan's Silver Astrolabe Geocoin and Pirate's Booty Micro - 2007 - Shiny Gold Geocoin.
