Cache is on the Mid State Trail in the Tiadaghton State
Forest.

The motivation for placing and finding this cache is the experience
of being in this section of Penn's Woods that seems so remote and
far from civilization, although the entire Trail is rarely more
than 1.5 miles from the nearest road. The cache can be approached
from the south at Schoolhouse Road or the north from Hackett's
Road. It's only about 1/4 mile from Hackett's Road, but there is a
steep descent. From Schoolhouse Road it's .71 miles, but an easier
hike. From Schoolhouse Road descend on the orange blazed Mid State
Trail along the south branch of Hackett Fork with repeated stream
crossings; the Trail climbs an old grade before descending to a
small primitive group camping area. The cache is located about 100
feet WSW of the stone fire ring.
Before this cache was published, but after it was placed, it
mysteriously turned up missing. An investigation revealed that a
bear had pilfered the plastic box, leaving it's contents intact but
destroying the container itself. I'm posting some photos I took the
day I found the missing box.
The Mid State Trail (part of the much longer Great Eastern Trail)
is an old fashioned 325 mile wilderness foot path across
Pennsylvania from the New York State border to the Maryland border.
Maintained by volunteers of the Mid State Trail Association, it's
first section was started in 1969 near State College, PA by founder
Tom Thwaites, who is still active in the organization. If you want
information about volunteering, or just want to find out more about
this wilderness trail, please access
