Henry Schuyler Thibodeaux was born in Albany, New York on January 1, 1769. He was orphaned at an early age. He was raised in the family of one of the wealthiest, most powerful men of the New York colony, General Philip Schuyler. Henry was sent to Scotland to receive a formal education. In the early 1790's, Henry Thibodeaux, who took Schuyler as his middle name, immigrated from Scotland to Louisiana. He took up the trade of shoemaker and married Felicite Bonvillain. They had three children but she died a few years later. He then married Bridgette Belanger with whom he had five children, one of whom was Bannon Goforth Thibodeaux, a Democratic member of Congress in the 1840's. Thibodeaux moved to Lafourche and later to a plantation he built on upper Bayou Terrebonne near present day Schriever, south of Thibodaux. In 1808 he became a justice of the peace for Lafourche parish and in 1812, he was chosen as a delagate to the state constitutional convention that helped create the state of Louisiana. He was elected to the new state Senate where he served for over a dozen years. In 1824, when serving as President of the Senate, he became interim governor because present Governor, Tomas B. Robertson resigned to become a Federal judge. He served as Governor from November to December 1824, when Robertson's elected succesor took office, Henry Johnson. Thibodeaux was the first Acadian Governor of Louisiana. In 1827, while campaining near Bayou Terrebonne for a regular term as Governor, he was struck down with a liver ailment. He died on October 24, 1827, when he was 58 years old. The city of Thibodaux,Louisiana is named after him. He is buried in Halfway Cemetary near the town of Gray, Louisiana.
This cemetery is located on LA Hwy 24 halfway between Houma and Thibodaux and may be the oldest cemetery in the area. Originally, this cemetery was owned by Henry Schuyler Thibodeaux and was used as a public cemetery as well as for his family and hiimself. The remains of Mr. Thibodeaux lie as dust in the bottom of the only remaining large multi-vaulted tomb standing in the cemetery. It stands alone on a small rise of ground in the center of the cemetery. In the early 1900's, rumors of jewels in the Thibodeaux casket prompted robbers on two occasions, to break into the tomb. In the tomb was only the dust from the wooden casket and the remains of Thibodeaux. There were two metal caskets in the tomb, that of his son, Henry Claiborne Thibodeaux and his daughter-in-law, Mathilda Toups Thibodeaux. The robbers had entered the tomb by breaking a hole in the rear. The hole remained open for years before being plastered over. The two remaining metal caskets were finally removed and buried in an unmarked area in the back of St.Bridget's cemetery in Schriever. No marker is on these tombs so they would not be disturbed again. There has been much controversy over the ownership of the cemetery over the years. In 1980, the Terrebonne Parish Polie Jury took over the cemetery. At that time, it was over 150 years old and was a historical cemetery. Papers were signed and now the cemetary is legally public property. Henry Schuyler Thibodeaux's tomb has been renovated and is a beautiful white marble tribute to him, the "Father of Terrebonne Parish". The care and upkeep of the cemetery is now in the hands of the Police Jury.
