One of my favourite places. Hope you enjoy the view and appreciate the history of this magical place. When you get to co-ordinates, go ten feet or so towards the fence and let your geosenses be your guide.
This cache is the 27th in the BC Spirit Quest - a series of caches dedicated to the pioneers of BC. Each cache is hidden NEAR BUT NEVER IN a cemetery of historical significance.Much can be learned from our predecessors. Feel free to post pictures (but not spoilers) of any interesting headstones or scenery.
THE CEMETERY:
This cemetery is located up the hill from the parking area for the historic park in Barkerville. The lower part of the cemetery is relatively modern, and is still being actively used. The upper part, which you see from the cache site, dates to the 1870's on, and is no longer available for modern burials. If you wander about and read some of the stones, you will be amazed at how young many of these people were at the time of their death - average life span in this area during the gold rush of the 1860's was only 35. Life here was very tough, and many died young from injuries or from illness aggravated by the cold wet conditions in the mines.
If you go into Barkerville during the season when it's open (May long weekend to mid-September) you might want to take the cemetery tour and learn about some of the fascinating characters who were drawn to this harsh but beautiful area by the lust for gold.
CACHE CONTAINS LOG AND PENCIL ONLY.
Probably not accessible when there is heavy snow on the ground as the road will not have been plowed.
