Geocache Description:

Medium cache with room for swag and it also contains a pen and pencil. This cache resides at 8083 feet in elevation.

This is cache number two in my beetle kill series, and it is also cache number four in my 40X40 series. It is a medium black container near one of the survivors of the beetle kill epidemic. There are thousands of beetle kill trees in this National Forest (visit link)
This very old gravel section of Highway 40 dates from before 1919. It skirts the edge of the mountain because earth-moving equipment in those days were not readily capable of removing the type of rock and soil that was required by the modern highway you traveled here on. It replaced the first road from the east into this area as a shorter, summer only road. Winters on this mountain are long and the snow is deep and was beyond the capacities of the snow removal equipment from that era. The original Highway 40 can still be seen if you look over the edge of the mountain to your south. It snakes along the Yampa Valley floor and winds it’s way past scenic Catamount Lake. Take the time and your camera to admire this view; it will be worth your time. The Sarvis, or Serviceberries were plump and ripe and delicious when I placed this cache here in mid August. Be sure and look for those too. They are dark purple to black berries on a short bush (visit link)
