Gregor IV war wohl der berühmteste der Lederwasch-Dynastie. Von ihm wird erzählt, er habe für den Erzbischof Hieronymus in Salzburg das Walserfeld beim Untersberg trocken gelegt. Für diese Arbeit hat er nur 300 Gulden verlangt, während ein anderer Ingenieur, dem die Trockenlegung allerdings nicht gelungen war, 10.000 Gulden kassiert hatte. Wohl deshalb reichte es nur für einen kleinen Cache. Erst die neuere Forschung hat Hinweise darauf gefunden, wo dieser versteckt ist. Die Hinweise finden sich vor Allem in einem erst kürzlich entdeckten Schreiben Gregors IV an seinen Sohn Gregor V. Dass Gregor IV als Geometer schon Koordinaten zur Positionsangabe kannte, verwundert nicht. Dass sich sein System perfekt in das WGS 84 einfügt, und zwar vom Ursprung N 47° 07’ und E 013° 48’, mag als Glücksfall für die modernen Geocacher angesehen werden.

Um die Zahl zu finden, die die Richtung bezeichnet, in der die Sonne nie steht, gehe so vor:
Wenn du vor meiner Behausung im Markte selbst stehst und in eben diese Richtung blickst, siehst du auf dem rechten Erker eine Jahreszahl. Nimm die Hälfte der dritten Ziffer. Das ist die erste Ziffer der gesuchten Zahl.
Auf dem linken Erker hingegen siehst du ein von mir gemaltes Gnadenbild. Zähle die Sterne, die das Haupt der Jungfrau mit dem Kind umgeben. Das ist die zweite Ziffer der gesuchten Zahl.
Sieh dir nun mein Gemälde auf dem Feilbadhaus an. Es trägt die Überschrift „Willst du gesund werden“. Dort habe ich auch angezeigt, welche Stelle der Bibel mich dazu inspiriert hat. Die Zahl, die den Vers angibt ist die dritte Ziffer der gesuchten Zahl.

Zähle nur die großen und nur die in der untersten Reihe. So erhältst du die erste Ziffer der gesuchten Zahl.
Erinnerst du dich noch an die Bibelstelle, die ich auf dem Feilbadhaus zitiert habe? Wenn du zählst und zuerst die Zahl des Kapitels sagst, dann die Zahl des Verses, was wäre dann die nächste Zahl, die du nennst, wenn du auf diese Weise weiter zählst? Das ist die zweite Ziffer der gesuchten Zahl.
Auf der Fassade meines Wohnhauses im Markt habe ich auch ein nützliches Messgerät aufgemalt, das allerdings nur bei Sonnenschein richtig funktioniert. Nimm die Zahl ganz rechts auf seiner Skala. Das ist die dritte Ziffer der gesuchten Zahl.
So hast du also die Zahl, die die Richtung bezeichnet, in der die Sonne aufgeht.

Gregor IV probably was the most famous member of the Lederwasch dynasty. It is said that he successfully dried up the Walserfeld marshland near the Untersberg for Archbishop Hieronymus of Salzburg. He only asked 300 guilders for this work, while another engineer, who had not succeeded, had taken 10.000 guilders. Maybe this is the reason why it is only a small cache. Not so long ago hints have been found as to where it is hidden. The hints are primarily contained in a recently discovered letter from Gregor IV to his son Gregor V. It comes at no surprise that Gergor IV, being a land surveyor, knew about coordinates to give a position. The fact that his system perfectly fits into WGS 84, and this from the origin of N 47° 07’ and E 013° 48’, may be regarded a lucky coincidence for modern geocachers.

If you stand in front of my abode in the village itself and look in just that direction, you see on the right oriel a number indicating a year. Take a half of the third digit. This is the first digit of the number you are looking for.
On the left oriel, however, I painted a picture of the Blessed Mother. Count the stars around the head of the virgin with the child. This is the second digit of the number you are looking for.
Now have a look at my painting on the bath house called Feilbadhaus. The caption says “Willst du gesund werden”, which means in English “Do you want to get well”. There I have also indicated the passage in the bible that inspired me. The number of the verse is the third digit of the number you are looking for.
Thus you have the number that indicates the direction where the sun never is.

Every time you go to do the duties that have been fulfilled by our family for many generations and that I passed on to you when I got more and more assignments as painter and land surveyor, you see to the right of the big entrance door big arched windows and small rectangular ones. Count the big ones only, and only those in the lower row. Thus you get the first digit of the number you are looking for.
Do you recall the scripture I quoted on the bath house? If you count, and you say first the number of the chapter and then the number of the verse, if you continued counting in that way, what would be the next number you say? This is the second digit of the number you are looking for.
On the façade of my house in the village I have also painted a useful instrument, which, however, only works correctly in sunlight. Take the rightmost number on its scale. This is the third digit of the number you are looking for.
Thus you have the number that indicates the direction where the sun rises.
