2008 marks the 60th anniversary of the death of Dame Agnes, so
it seems fitting to place a cache at this time in her honour. Agnes
Hunt was born in Shropshire in 1867 and despite suffering from a
painful hip condition, trained to be a nurse. In 1900 she opened a
convalescent home for children in Baschurch. It was in 1903 that
she first met Robert Jones, an orthopaedic surgeon from Liverpool
whom she was consulting regarding her hip condition. He was so
impressed with her work at the Baschurch home that he teamed up
with her and together they expanded the services that the home was
able to offer.
In 1921 they outgrew the facilities in Baschurch and moved to
the present location in Gobowen and were renamed the Shropshire
Orthopaedic Hospital. It was renamed again following the death of
Sir Robert Jones in 1933 as the Robert Jones & Agnes Hunt
Orthopaedic Hospital. The hospital has gone from strength to
strength ever since and is now one of the largest providers of
elective orthopaedic surgery in the country and has an
international reputation for excellence. Furthermore the hospital
came out on top in the recent National Inpatient Survey looking at
the quality of care given in over 160 hospitals, a fact that Dame
Agnes would no doubt have been proud of. Further information about
the hospital can be found at
Link
The coordinates will take you to the east entrance of the
hospital and to one end of the main corridor. All the information
that you need can be obtained from this corridor and there is no
need to stray from it. (Currently building work has resulted in the
answer to question 9 being removed, I have therefore given the
answer in the question below) Open access to the corridor is
available between 7 AM and 9 PM. The cache itself is not within the
hospital grounds but is a short walk away. Parking is available in
the hospital car parks, but it will cost you £2 for the priviledge!
I would recommend parking on North Drive at the coordinates given
below where there is usually room for one or two cars. Please make
sure you don’t obstruct any gates or entrances and if you park on a
double yellow you do so at your own risk. You’ve been warned!
