In their top-secret, underground lair, Las Chicas de la Ciudad
(who sometimes go by their "City Girls" alias) received an
intriguing email from the Black Hand Banditos, requesting their
assistance in the matter of a heinous hotel heist.
“What are they heisting?” asked bo_bo.
“Towels, pillowcases, and those little tiny soaps,” replied
anet. “It’s part of their plan for world domination.”
Bo_bo looked at her cohort skeptically. “How do towels,
pillowcases, and soap lead to world domination?”
“Who knows how those banditos think? But this caper sounds
simple enough. Let’s give them a hand!”
Las chicas y los banditos met up in the parking lot of
the Hotel Ohio in Westlake under cover of darkness. The banditos
wore their trademark sombreros and bandoliers, while the City Girls
wore much more practical black cat burglar outfits. Bandito carried
an impressive-looking electronic device resplendent with blinky
lights and displaying a number of gauges. Bandita held a small,
portable fire extinguisher. Bo_bo shot anet one of those “this is
another fine mess you’ve gotten me into” glances.
“It’s simple,” explained bandito. “This machine is wired into a
small plastic card that slips into the key slot in the hotel room
door. It sends an electronic signal that disengages the locking
mechanism. It’s based on a complex algorithm which I derived
by…”
Bandita interrupted before he went off into a lengthy
explanation. “He saw it on an infomercial. It’s really easy to use.
Just keep a careful eye on the gauges, and if it starts to emit
smoke, spray it down with this.” She handed the fire extinguisher
to anet.
Sotto voce, bo_bo asked her friend, "What do you suppose
the micrometers are for?"
"Don't ask! Don't ask!"
Bandita slid the card into the slot, and bandito flipped a
switch. As the sound of clicking locks filled the corridor, los
banditos sneaked into the rooms with a large burlap sack.
“Just remember to watch those gauges!” said bandito, holding the
sack as bandita tossed towels, passed pillowcases, and slung
soap.
