Calvin, Oklahoma. Home to 279 residents, and I think that might
include the town's dogs. Because of the town's proximity to the
Canadian River, many of the residents and their kids own
4-wheelers. It's actually legal to ride an ATV on the streets of
this town, just don't drive down Highway 1 or the Highway Patrol
might get you.
I love this town. I lived and worked here for more than a year, and
got to know many of the locals. On the day I placed this cache, I
visited with the owners of "The Store" (yes, that's what its
called-The Store), the lady who cuts my hair, 2 waitresses I know,
and 3 or 4 regular customers...all of whom I consider to be my
friends.
Yes, you heard me right. I still come down here about once a month
to get my hair cut, and never fail to visit the cafe and eat. I
have never lived anywhere in my life where there are so many
friendly people, and where I look forward to visiting as often as I
can.
This is one of those places where character and integrity are not
only noticed, but appreciated. Where everybody knows you by name,
and talks about you to others. This is where I lived when I bought
both of my motorcycles, and was home to both of my girls many
weekends. My career in Land Surveying began here.
Speaking of the girls, they could walk to the store, and nobody
would bother them. Later, I'd get a report of who they talked to,
if they screwed around on the way, what they bought at the store,
and how much change they got back. They thought I had eyes in the
back of my head... heh heh...
"The Store" is the social center of the town. Nearly everyone eats
here at least every few days, and all the town news is informally
disseminated at the tables in the cafe. If you visit "The Store"
while you are in town, be sure to tell one or two of the waitresses
that Bryan said Hi. Unless you happen to get a new employee,
they'll know who you are talking about.
