The Geoggler

This is the tale of what happened to me one warm spring afternoon as I was walking home through the park. The weather was nice and several people were picnicking or playing with frisbees and hacky sacks. After a while I passed by a man juggling clubs in a secluded corner of the park. He was an elderly man with a neatly cropped white beard and I paused to watch because it was rather an unusual sight. He was doing mostly common patterns (backcrosses, mills mess, and i remember several 423 variations), but he had an interesting style with lots of flourishes and smooth wrist movements, and I didn't realize I was staring until he gathered up the clubs and started packing them into his bag.
He must have noticed me watching because all of a sudden he looked right at me and with a little smile produced four brightly coloured balls from his open bag. Then, before my astonished eyes, he started juggling what I can only describe as, well, probably the most amazing pattern I have ever seen!
It was incredibly complex; sometimes fast and controlled, sometimes beautifully slow with lots of extra motions - like a meticulously choreographed dance where every movement flows into the next; so natural yet elegant. At one point he transferred all the balls to one side of the pattern, with the last one going really high, and underneath it he passed one ball behind the neck and pirouetted, all in one organic motion. All throughout he was mixing in various body throws and catches - as a whole it was the most astounding experience you can have watching someone tossing small objects repeatedly into the air.
Suddenly he caught all the balls in one hand and started packing up his things. I don't know if he could tell how dumbfounded I was (maybe he was well aware of the effect his juggling could have on people) but as he was zipping up his bag he glanced at me with an amused look on his face. 'If you liked that you should see me doing it with film canisters.'
'Well,' I said, finally finding my voice again, 'that was great! I mean... you're really good. How come I've never seen you here before?'
The bearded man shrugged. 'Too busy for me here. I prefer being closer to nature.'
'I see.' I was feeling mildly disappointed.
'Actually,' he continued while getting ready to leave, 'I have a favourite spot where I spend most of my time. Come by some day and say hello - I will show you some of the other patterns I've been working on.'
'That would be great!' I said, 'Maybe I'll do that!'
The old juggler was already walking away from me. 'See you there then.'
'Wait!' I shouted after him. 'You haven't told me where it is!'
He kept on walking and for a second I thought he hadn't heard me, but then he stopped and turned around with a far-away look on his face. 'Really? I'm sure I...'
He stood there frowning for some moments before he turned his back on me and continued walking. And then he was gone.

I walked the remaining way home feeling confused and a bit sad, but also I found I couldn't take my mind off the pattern he'd shown me. I tried to visualize the way it flowed, but could feel it slipping away from me even as I did so. When I got home I took out a sheet of paper and attempted to draw some kind of representation of what I had seen (or at least how it had appeared to me), but that only ended up looking like a pale shadow of what I'd experienced in the park and soon I got up and left it in disgust.
I've kept the sketch, but I have never seen the old man or his spellbinding juggling-pattern again.
