Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden near an old WW I highway structure on Smartville Road, a little to the east of Beale AFB.

In 1919 WW I was officially ended by the Treaty of Versailles. The League of Nations was created; the 19th Amendment was proposed (women's suffrage); and the 18th Amendment (prohibition) went into effect. The Model T Ford was equipped with an electric starter (to overcome hand cranking the engine); Goddard fired off the first two-stage rocket; Oregon imposed the first gasoline tax (to support highway construction); dial telephones were introduced; the Grand Canyon and Zion National Parks were established; A&W Root Beer was created, and became America's first franchised restaurant chain; short wave radio was developed; homogenized milk became popular; George and Ira Gershwin began writing songs; and the pogo stick was invented. UCLA was founded, as were RCA, United Artists, and the American Legion. The cost of a fist-class stamp increased to three cents.

In sports, Jack Dempsey became the heavy-weight boxing champion, and Jackie Robinson was born. Other notable people born in 1919 include JD Salinger, Andy Rooney, Edmund Hillary, Jack Palance, Ernie Kovaks, Jennifer Jones, Nat King Cole, Liberace, Pete Seeger, and Tennessee Ernie Ford. To paraphrase a line from one of Ernie's songs, "You find 16 caches and what do you get?, another day older and deeper in debt!"
