This cache has been archived.

Dyffryn: This one has gone missing too many times to replace it again, a pity but perhaps another cacher might like to place another cache in this location/.

Geocache Description:

Apart from a short scramble up to the cache, the rest is level.

This is one of a series of caches on the canal system around Birmingham and Solihull. The Birmingham and Warwick Canal towpath is part of the Grand Union Canal Walk, a long distance recreational route starting at Gas Street Basin in the City Centre.
The cache is a 450ml clip top box in a 'cammo' bag hidden just off the towpath. The initial contents are:
Log Book and pencil with sharpener (not a swap!)
4x4 Pick-up, Racing Car, 2 model soldiers, dolls house table lamp and Kansas Geocoin 'Dorothy'
This length of the Grand Union Canal from Digbeth to Warwick was authorised in 1793 and the canal opened in 1799 as the Warwick and Birmingham Canal making the link through to London with the Grand Junction Canal. The canal prospered for the next 100 years but as the railway system developed, that became the carrier of choice and canals began to loose trade. In 1929 the Grand Union Canal Company bought the canals between Regents Canal dock in Wapping and Birmingham under one ownership and in the ensuing years the canal was widened to a 12'6"standard. Following the first world war the canals steadily declined as carriers of goods and are now principally recreational waterways.
The cache can be approached from three directions, two along the tow path and one along the path to the canal that is between the cemetry and the allotments. The most interesting is that from the access point at Yardley Rd. The canal is in a very deep cutting and you could be excused for not knowing that the canal was there. The transition from urban landscape to unspoilt natural environment is remarkable. As I placed the cache I was watched by a heron and a family of moorhens passed by.
