The cache is located inside a medium-sized storage container. This spot showcases an incredible view of the Susquehanna River as well as the Holtwood Dam, which demonstrates the successful combination of clean, renewable power generation; recreation; environmental education; and land management.
You also can view the fish lifts from this great vantage point. The Holtwood fish lifts — among the largest in the nation — are part of a multimillion-dollar project to enable migrating shad to continue their annual spring journey up the Susquehanna River. The lifts are capable of helping tens of thousands of fish over the dam each season. Also, keep your eyes to the sky for the resident bald eagles that nest across the river.
While in the area, don’t forget to visit the Shenk’s Ferry Wildflower Preserve. It is one of the most impressive wildflower areas in the eastern United States and certainly one of the most popular natural locations in Lancaster County. PPL takes pride in preserving the glen as a wildflower sanctuary and has created a hiker’s haven with over 5,000 acres around the preserve. There are 39 miles of trails around Lake Aldred that lead to scenic overlooks, historic sites or to wooded areas that are unique for their forest growth. When finished geocaching, take a peek into the Holtwood Environmental Education Center, which is located nearby
